We certainly don’t want the BSOD to crash. So that’s a reason.

TV also had a social aspect that internet does not have by construction: You had the same program on only a few TV channels and this was funneling people to talk about similar things or have discussions about the previous day show.

These things rarely happen organically anymore unless "forced" in one way or the other...

FWIW as a fan of git add -p I tend to use the “squash workflow” rather than commit -i.

Real machine learning research has promise, especially over long time scales.

Imminent AGI/ASI/God-like AI/end of humanity hawks are part of a growing AI cult. The cult leaders are driven by insatiable greed and the gullible cult followers are blinded by hope.

And I say this as a developer who is quite pleased with the progress of coding assistant tools recently.

I think that is the problem. LLMs for mental health are going to very bad, but for most people that is all that will be available.

It doesn't show that they "struggle". It shows that they don't behave according to modern standards. I wouldn't put much weight into an industry without sensible scientific base that used to classify homosexuality as a disease not so long ago. The external validity of the study is dubious, let's see comparison to no therapy, alternative therapy, standard therapy; and then compare success rates.

Right, this result seems meaningless without a human clinician control.

I'd very much like to see clinicians randomly selected from Better Help and paid to interact the same way with the LLM patient and judged by the LLM, as the current methodology uses. And see what score they get.

> And what did you do with them? Throw them away?

The ones that aged out of running needed software are still sitting in a cabinet somewhere. A couple of the others were killed off when their battery pack swelled, and another didn't survive a local tech's efforts to replace the battery...

With batteries that could be replaced without delaminating the whole device, (and ideally, an open boot loader), I'd be able to make use of most of them.

That is exactly what a sociopath would say isn't it? Without an actual study by a trusted institute I would highly question such claims.

I believe Google has developed a Rust implementation of the binder driver which was recently merged, and they are apparently planning to remove the original C implementation. Considering binder is essential for Android that would be a major step too.

So you're saying even dumber wordsacks, poorly trained and biased are somehow better?

I tend to wonder whether people who make claims like that are confusing intelligence with consciousness. The claim as stated above could be a summary of a certain aspect of the hard problem of consciousness: that it's not clear how one could "coax consciousness out of a box of inanimate binary switches" - but the connection to "intelligence" is dubious. Unless of course one believes that "true" intelligence requires consciousness.

Nothing wrong with ads in the correct context, a good part of why we bought print computer magazines was to look at them as well as the articles.

Alright, I've changed it to Tell HN.

>> We need to start ensuring our capacity to go from 0-1 on media distribution, not from 10-100 or 100

And a dozen pirate networks stand ready to fill that void at a moment's notice. From oldschool torrent, to cyberlockers, to the dark webs of Tor and FreeNet ... there is an entire ecosystem of hardened video distribution schemes out there. Youtube was aguably born from piracy and fights in the courts to this day. The next thing, whatever replaces youtube, will likely also come from the shadows.

I keep waiting for the Kindle to allow notetaking by dictation. It works well on an iPad; it’s so much quicker and smoother than handwriting notes.

> Particulates issued from tailpipes can aggravate asthma and heart disease and increase the risk of lung cancer and heart attack. Globally, they are a leading risk factor for premature death.

Minor nitpick, but tailpipes aren't the primary source of emissions. The study is about PM2.5[0]. which will chiefly be tires and brake pads. Modern gasoline engines are relatively clean, outside of CO2, though diesel engines spit out a bunch of bad stuff.

First, kudos on this. Really cool to play with.

Reminds me of a great video not long ago that went over the main ideas behind weaving and knitting. Feels like you almost certainly have to take some of those ideas in mind when doing a simulation like this. Would be curious to read a breakdown of how this was made and how it incorporates the concepts that go into different fabric.

I've only now noticed the "Manual:" tag, probably indicating it was a "manual written post". I love this

OP, this is a neat tech demo, but I'm curious what the practical use would be?
