Did Ukraine harbor terrorists that killed thousands of Russians? Comparing Ukraine to Afghanistan doesn’t work. Ukraine was a peaceful nation. Afghanistan was harboring terrorists and terrorists training camps and these terrorists had attacked US multiple times before. Osama Bin Laden wasn’t even a Afghanistan citizen, he was from Saudi Arabia.
He foresaw way back in the 80-90s that corporations are going to put software on their dishwasher anyway irrespective of what people want. If his idealistic goals were to be realized by now, at least they would have full control over it.
Sure, but we're talking single-digit percentages of people who ever interface with this stuff directly. We've had full(ish) control over desktop computer operating systems for decades and 2% of people use desktop linux. Google built ChromeOS on linux and started selling laptops loaded with their proprietary services, and it eclipsed desktop linux in a couple years.
Unfortunately if his goals came to fruition the vast majority of people would be in the same place. I'm not sure what the answer is, but it seems like free software is only a small piece of it.

Well their observation is completely wrong. Timing is the most important factor which matters. I have seen thousands of extremely good non-political, neutral, tech related articles not getting a single upvote if it is submitted at times most of US/Western Europe is sleeping.

Ever since a bigoted scoundrel had to resign as CEO of Mozilla by trying to deny humans theirs rights, HN always has a generally negative view of Firefox. Just notice the outrage on the paltry 2 million salary of their CEO, while the same people will come to defend multi milion dollar salaries of white male CEOs who are far far worse than Mitchell Baker.
Funny how China doing something are always in the future tense. Whereas the ones who have committed the atrocity of actually illegally detaining an executive by putting pressure on a friendly country is the USA.
So? A criminal country with the worst instances of human rights violations and violation of international law all across the world illegally detains the CFO of a company because of their country; and you expect that her country is not going to take action on that?
It wasn't an illegal detainment. The company was working with Iran. Oh and she lived in a mansion in Vancouver throughout the whole thing. I'm sure she had endured much hardship getting a free vacation for a couple years.
Illegally detaining an executive is not an "atrocity". Violation of international norms, perhaps, but not an atrocity. Atrocity takes a lot higher standard than that.
