I find it extremely interesting to read about these and other "culture bound disorders".
Apparently, when enough people believe a stupid and obviously false thing, people feel free to express their opinion that it is true nonetheless.
This is of course how the West is being destabilised: By internet troll factories (sponsored by China? Russia? who knows?) that are payed to spout such huge amounts of nonsense into our field of vision that we feel more free to express our obviously wrong ideas as well...
Having a highly educated populace is not insulation a society against these kinds of attacks.
