The ultimatum they placed on US/NATO last month was unattainable from the start (block Ukraine/Georgia from ascension, no NATO expansion, roll back Eastern Europe front). It certainly gave fodder both sides to trump up propaganda war machine, and an ugly gas price war (though unrelated but still opportunistic).
