Ask HN: Is a regular developer blog desireable in a B2C SaaS product?
1 point by t-writescode on Jan 7, 2024 | hide | past | favorite | 4 comments
I'm in the process of starting a B2C SaaS product; and I'm debating on sharing regular updates about decisions I'm making, struggles I'm having, etc. Part of me is interested in using this product as a potential portfolio for my skills, in the event that the product doesn't take off, so maybe there's value in relaying what I've done and am working on, etc?

But also, nothing of my product can be bought yet - in fact, I'm still working on the prototype to share with friends to get their opinion on, etc, so it would be a blog on an under construction website, which doesn't sound great either.

Thoughts? I'd love to get knowledge and feedback here, I'm very new to all of this! Well, old dev, new marketer.

The basic theory of the marketing blog is that SEO is like playing the lottery, that is, every page you have is another chance to get a hit. If you've written 50 blog posts about your product, that's 10x more pages than if you just made a brochure site with 5 pages. Nobody is going to link one of your brochure pages but getting links and social media shares for blog posts is a lot easier.

The important part of playing the lottery in this case would be to not play with garbage tickets, right? In the sense that, if you catch a user on any hyper-specific page which seems to have appeared on their search/advertising preference results, you want them to not feel like they looked at spam...

If not, this approach feels like it would be easy to abuse!

It has to be good stuff.

Thank you and everyone else that responded to you for responding. What you've said makes sense and it also helps clarify why certain websites do what they do and how they do it.

Guess I'm going to be a proper writer, too! Hah!
